The settlement at Cuttyhunk in 1602 is depicted in the banner for this page taken from a painting by Albert Bierstadt. Bartholomew Gosnold sailed from Falmouth, England in the Concord with 32 on board. They intended to establish a colony in New England which they did at Cuttyhunk Island. They had insufficient provisions to overwinter and the settlers decided to return to England. Bartholomew Gosnold, after his return to England, obtained an exclusive charter from King James I for the Virginia Company. Gosnold served as vice-admiral of the expedition and captain of the Godspeed, one of three ships on the voyage in 1607 to establish the colony of Jamestown.
